Gun Confiscated from Arrested Suspect Previously Reported Stolen

Police on St. Thomas traced a firearm confiscated from a suspect this week and found that the weapon had been stolen in a recent residential burglary.

Police conducted a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) check and local Firearms Bureau investigation on the weapon. The National Crime Information Center is an arm of the FBI that maintains a computerized data base of information including stolen firearms, wanted and missing persons and other categories of criminal justice information.

The investigation revealed that the .40 caliber firearm was reported stolen a recent residential burglary. Police continue to investigate this case and anticipate additional arrests.

The suspect, 26-year-old Mitchell Browne was picked up on an arrest warrant for Third Degree Assault. Police said Browne was positively identified as the person who fired shots at a 30-year-old male victim in September near the Oswald Harris housing community basketball court.

When Browne was arrested Friday, December 10 at about 9 a.m. police found the weapon on him. He was charged with Unauthorized Possession of an Unlicensed Firearm and arrested again at 11 a.m. on the Assault Charge.

Once police determined the weapon was stolen, Browne was arrested a third time, at about 3:30 p.m. Monday, December 13 and charged with Possession of Stolen Property.

Browne was held on $35,000 bail and returned to the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action. Mitchell Browne
