Arrest Made In Work And Rest Shooting

CHRISTIANSTED, ST. CROIX, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS - On Sunday, October 28, 2018, 911 Emergency Call Center received a call at approximately 4:40 pm of a multiple discharging of shots in Work and Rest, Christiansted.

Upon officer’s arrival, they discovered multiple shell casings on the ground in the roadway and a dead horse in the area that was shot multiple times.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a male individual was riding a horse when a car pulled up next to him and discharged multiple gunshots, striking the victim in the mid-section of the body and killing the horse.

The victim was transported by private vehicle to the Juan F. Luis Hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained from gunshot wounds.

On Monday, October 29, 2018, 32-year-old Ashnel Evelle Walters was arrested and charged for Assault 1st and other possible charges pending. Walters was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending advise of rights hearing.

This case is presently under investigation by the Major Crime Unit.

Note: The horse was examined by the Department of Agriculture’s Veterinarian and this incident is also being investigated by the VIPD Animal Cruelty Division.
