Officers Recover Unlicensed Gun During Traffic Stop on Veteran’s Drive

St. Thomas, USVI – On Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 5:52 p.m., Police Officers observed a black Honda Civic with heavily tinted windows traveling eastbound on Veterans Drive. Officers initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle in the area of the Windward Passage Hotel. During the traffic stop procedures, when the driver opened his door, officers detected what appeared to smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Kirk G. Thomas, 38 years-old, was asked to step out of the vehicle and officers observed his legs and hands were shaking and a bulge in the front of his waist band. Mr. Thomas admitted to officers that he was in possession of a firearm that he was not licensed to carry.

Mr. Thomas was found in possession of unlicensed Smith and Wesson M&P .45 caliber handgun. Mr. Thomas was taken into custody and transported to the Richard Callwood Command, where bail was set for $50,000 and he was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. He was booked, processed and remanded to the VI Bureau of Corrections pending his Advice of Rights Hearing.
