Two Drownings Reported on St. John During the President’s Day Weekend

St. John, USVI - On Sunday, February 19, 2023, at approximately 6:39 p.m., detectives were notified of a drowning that occurred on Hawksnest Beach on St. John.

On Sunday, February 19, 2023, at an unknown time, a male and his wife traveled to Hawksnest Beach to snorkel. While observing two sting rays as they snorkeled, the female’s snorkel began to take on water. The male then attempted to assist the female by getting her to a nearby reef and calling out for help. Once on the reef, the female was rendered CPR with the aide of bystanders who came to assist. The female was then assisted to shore and 911 was notified. The female was pronounced dead and identified by her husband as 62-year-old, Mrs. Tammy Kincaid from Virginia.

Salt Pond, St. John

On Monday, February 20, 2023, at approximately 2:00 p.m., detectives were notified of a drowning that occurred at Salt Pond Beach, St. John.

At an unknown time on Monday, February 20, 2023, a female and her husband was moored at Salt Pond Beach where they left their vessel on a dinghy to snorkel near a reef. When the male attempted to re-enter the dinghy, he had issues doing so. Once inside of the dinghy, the male collapsed and was transported to the shore where CPR was rendered and 911 was notified. The male was pronounced dead and identified by his wife as 68-year-old, Mr. Mark Burke from Iowa.
